this might be a good place to start for your search. tel#'s and people who can lead you a contractor who is aware of these practices which are adopted by the city of santa monica.

probably has a list. I know they have a list of members atleast and then you can probably weed out the contractors (if any).

don't be fooled. there is no such thing. it's the architect's responsibility to make sure the project is green, not the contractor.

YOU'RE SO WRONG bryan4arch. You obviously are not aware of builders in the San Francisco Bay Area because you'd know that there are.

bryan4arch, thats a big claim and i am afraid a knee jerk reaction. as you well know building as a process involves more than an architect. a lot of green building practices involve newly adopted old ways, new technology and products, installations. i agree the green building must start from the drawing boards, clients request, but, they must also include a builder who knows these practices and knowledgable about putting them together.
a contractor is an essential part of building practice as much as the architect and there is a 'right' contractor for every type of project. if you have the choice, wouldn't you want to work with the appropriate builder who can understand your design intent and applied technology? i think thats what tectonic is looking for.

I'm wondering if any of you know the contractor for the Natural Resources Defense Council (http://www.nrdc.org/cities/building/smoffice/intro.asp) in Santa Monica.

if anyone wants to do any of their own reading about how to do a little contractor + green = ???? stuff they can start with this little read on recycling and construction by the Institution Recylcing network...

even if the green contractors exist (I think they do) its good to be an architect with some background...
