Would the abscence of cad drawings and renderings hurt my portfolio for grad school?

sz0001

I am wondering how important is the inclusion of renderings and cad drawings in a portfolio for grad school? My portfolio as of right now consists entirely of hand drafted drawings. The preference for hand drawings is b/c i've found it to be an important part of my thought process...and also b/c I still find hand drawings to be much more beautiful and intimate that computer drawings.

Since mostly every portfolio coming out of architecture programs these days are dominated by cad drawings and polished renderings, would the absence of computer graphics hurt the quality of my portfolio?

no worries, long as what you got shows quality and intelligence. i believe there are a few luddite programs out there (University of Notre dame maybe?) that would lap it up if you are into classicism...

after graduation though it would be a different story. if you aint got Cad you aint got game.

UVA would eat that up, so would a lot of programs, as jump said its the quality not the medium for most places

If it's good, it's good. But if your drafting looks the same as a computer drafted drawing, then why not computer done?

Sketches will always look great, probably now more than ever.

I think it's refreshing to see some nicely rendered hand drawings. My portfolio from this past january included many sketchy renderings as well as polished hand drawings and also finished computer renderings. That being said, I think its important to show a range of abilities inculding polished computer and hand renderings. And as always, quality over quantity.

speaking of the display of content and intelligence over quantity... i wonder if for the few seconds that admissions reviewers look at your work, are they really looking at how well your drawings are represented graphically or are they trully looking at the content of the project?

b/c in order to truly understand whether if the content of each project is good or bad, i think that it would require more time than the few seconds that reviewers spend on each page; such as reading the text that goes along with the pics and actually studying the drawings to see if they make sense.

so really, are reviewers judging your ability based on how well u represent...how well u draw and make models?

b/c often ppl associate beautiful drawings and models with good content.

kind of true, but after doing this gig for coming up 15 years now i can pretty much tell whether i think a project is good or not a glance.

Sometimes a closer look reveals that it is actually junk, and sometimes if i look closer it turns out to be quite nice but badly presented. i don't usually look closer at the nice but badly presented stuff...

und that is the way the world works. gotta sell and sell fast.
