San Diego questions?

Lord Auch

HI all I am intent on settling in San Diego because of the reputation for inovative Urban infill design, housing and mixed use. I have been there several times and like the vibrance of the city. I have looked for design oriented small firms. Most of the firms I have found on the AIA San Diego web site awards section. Does any one have any recomendations for firms that I may not be aware of?
What is the cost of apartments and typical intern salaries?
Thanks for any help.

be sure to look into the cost of living there. i was there 38 years and was able to take advantage of the realestate boom. now, you need 3-400k to get into a basic condo in a reasonable part of town.

You should look at architects Teddy Cruz, Sebastain Mariscal, Johnathon Segal, Ted Smith and Rob Squiggly to name a few. In my 4th year at ASU we took a trip to San Diego to look at the housing and met with a lot of those architects.

I lived in SD for about 2 years and as long as you don't mind the 3-400k that form64 mentioned . . . . it is the place to be. I would also suggest living close to where you work. I lived in downtown and worked in downtown, so I hardly ever had to get in my car and drive.

As far as firms go... Studio E is cool. Estudio is Teddy's firm - he is very conceptual, cool stuff. RNP or I guess now it is actually RNTA (http://www.rntarchitects.com) is a great firm, this is where my wife worked. Public (http://www.publicdigital.com/) does some very nice work.
