This morning Vado had to have a root canal. My days of hard living are catching up to me. Surprisingly, the endodontic work itself was painless. The Doc shot me up with some pina colada flavored pain killer which was delish. The only painful parts of the procedure were while I was waiting for the painkiller to take effect, the Regis and Kelly show was playing on the flat screen tv above me. (more painkiller please) and secondly, the fact that even though i have insurance, i have to shell out five hundred of my own ducats.
Took the rest of the day off. Test drove an audi tt convertible and went to barnes and noble.
Instead of Barnes and Noble I prefer the local Half Price Books. Both new and used, really cheap stuff and a hilarious selection. Not so sterile as B&N or Borders. If Powells is out of reach, 1/2 Price is cool.
Just hope they didn't leave a piece of drill in your tooth, vado, as happened to a buddy of mine. Insurance nightmare getting that taken care of!
Landed a new master plan, townhouse project and hotel today...feel pretty good about the fact I just bought a new Mt. bike last weekend and can now afford to pay for it. I think I'll go for a ride tonight.
I love the Strand and "donate" half of my paycheck to their cause... but, b&n has it's place too. I like that they're at opposite ends of Union Square. The Strand is for all of those titles you didn't know you wanted until you found them there. B&N is for the specific book that you need asap. When I can't find what I need at The Strand I can run across the park and pick it up.
I don't think Willy has cancer. As far as I know, neither do I. He once told Rolling Stone mag. that he smokes weed so he doesn't kill people. You know, it calms his soul/clears his mind/ evens his keel if you will. Just like going through trees at 35 mph tends to keep you from thinking about much else.
Fro9k... its a kona King Kikapu. I'm and old guy so I still like X- country rides than hanging out in the downhill park with my sons. I also still need my arms to work and don't think having anything in a cast would be condusive to being productive in the office.
Good biking everywhere here if you get a chance to make the trip. Lots of rock, lots steeps and its all technical goin up or goin down.
Its about letting your mind wander.... I let mine wander to getting on my bike rather than sex..... as I noted I'm an old guy. The bike seat cut off the circulation years ago!
vado, if it makes you feel any better, i had a root canal in canada - socialized medicine, right? good work done, but i had to pay $700 out of pocket because social insurance only covered $200. you got a cheaper root canal in the states! go figure.
so i was at the y tonight checking out the ladies and while im working out (if you wanna call it that) novacaine for the soul starts playing. when i got home and opened my mail an invoice for 1701.50 from the dentist. go figure
love the eels, who would have been awesome on the soundtrack of brazil, which is available at barnes and noble, which DOES have arch books (though typically a very mediocre selection), which you then read in studio, which can feel like a root canal at times, for which mountain biking is one form of novacaine...
seven degrees of this thread... see, it's all connected :)
perhaps practice a little first... wouldn't suggest flying down a heavily forrested, steep hill at 35 mph while high as a satelite.. :)
then again, why the hell not?
i am bumping some good threads from the past as i can no longer abide the lack of quality found in recent topic creations. Coincidentally, one of my own topics will be first. Bump your favorites today!!!
Favorite independently owned bookstores by city, props to 'used' stores.
Lincoln, NE
a Novel Idea - with an owner named 'cinnamon' who lets her 2 cats roam free, you know you'll find something you like.
Blue Stem - didn't find out about this one till right before I left but i think it's my new favorite. It's hiding under the O street viaduct. good selection and good prices.
carmichael's, louisville ky: the original one (two now) is attached to a coffee shop and has a wonderful outdoor terrace where you can watch the city go by. also has roamin' cats.
hungry mind, st paul mn: cafe in front is called table of contents, their new book newsletter/paper is a great read too.
hennessy and ingalls, la: architecture book mecca.
The best bookstore on the planet is of course Powell's in downtown Portland Oregon. A full city block plus more. Used and new books co-mingled. Fantastic schedule of authors doing readings and interviews. Great little cafe with organic fair trade food, natch. Email newslatter is always entertaining and positive and makes you want to buy/read every book in the world.
And not only a store cat, but an entire portion of the store's website is devoted to the chronicles of said cat - Fup.
The store also operates as an active urban space due to multiple entries, cafe with huge windows, lots of open space inside, etc. Punk kids used to tend to hang out near the Burnside entry, and Douglas Coupland once asked a grizzly old vet who was panhandling near the entry (I used to see him often) what his typical take-home was: between $10-12 an hour.

after a traumatic day, i always end up at a book store or music store. i don't have to buy something, just wander and decompress.

Congrats, whistler, sounds like you're busy for awhile. Who says the economy sucks?! Enjoy your ride.
my root canal cost as much as a freakin mountain bike

hey whistler- what's the new ride? Whistler, BC is #1,2,3,4,&5 on my wish list of biking destinations, and all 3 of my mountain bikes are Canadian!
I mountain bike for the same reason Willy Nelson smokes weed.
does willie nelson have cancer?!?!
do YOU have cancer?!?!

My dentist is in Brazil. That makes the trip worthwhile.
when you said Dentist and Brazil i immediately thought of Marathon Man....
wait, wait a sec Barnes & Noble has architecture books? i haven't been there in like 8 years...
is it safe???
