Considering becoming an Architect?

ariana

I am, and Archinect provides very differing views on what the job is like. I get that it's HARD, obviously and I'd like to know all that I can about it.

Try some searches, been discussed a gazillion times.

We would need a ton more info - who are you?  What? Why? When?  Etc., etc.

I'll preface my typical advice with a new one, given the economy and all..."if you are wealthy or have family money, it can be great".   Now onto standard advice..."If you are questioning whether you should be an architect, then you shouldn't."

Thank you and I will continue to search; as for the considering? Bad title on my part. I meant to ask if anyone was interested in this profession. Some threads can be misleading or confusing, with all the point of views being tossed out there.

I am currently  a freshman in college, I'm seriously new to this site, and I don't have "family money". Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Do it if you love it... or else do something else that you have a true interest in.

shimmyshaw hits it on the head

and if you actually do love it, its not as hard as some people make it out to be.  I would imagine doing something you hate is much harder.

That's right.  Sucker one more unsuspecting person into this field.

Yeah, do it cuz you love it.  And while you are at it, make sure you go into massive debt via student loans.  After you graduate, make sure to find a firm that pays you very little so you can be chained to that massive student loan debt for the next 30 years.

no the better option is to do something you hate for the next 30 years, while most likely still having student loan debt

lets not pretend architecture students are the only students who accumulate student loan debt

If being an architect is so hard, why are you doing it?

The poster was seeking advice.  I'd imagine they wanted something concrete.  Not that I helped out.  The notion that we do architecture for love is one of the problems with this field.  Provide the poster with something more tangible than the "if you love it". Starving artist sydrome is not conducive to most peoples lifestyles.

I gave advice

You claimed, i guess because you disagree with my advice, that i am suckering him into the profession

I like being an architect, I have no delusions that because i am not designing a new skyscraper or whatever fun cool project we did in design studios every day that my life sucks.

Liking or loving what you do is absolutely a consderation in choosing your profession.  If you dont like it, you shouldnt do it.  Thats not suckering anyone into the profession

What would you consider a reason for becoming an architect today?  Or should everyone just run away from the profession because the economy currently sucks and you probably come out of school with student loans?

You can only dream so much, buddy. But it's time to face the reality. Architecture isn't a financially stable business.

Healthcare is.  A dental hygienist can easily make $80k a year with full benefits/vacation time/etc.  Personally not for me, but many in the healthcare profession enjoy helping others (as opposed to architecture, where, more or less, we are 'designing' to help ourselves).

There's always a need them. I think architects could help others; it depends what they build and for who in their practice.
