Charitable Commission in Africa--any advice?

cyn

I've been asked to design a school/dormitory on 50 acres for a charity that rescues victims of child trafficking in Benin. Does anyone have any experience with building in Africa? What to expect? what will I have to deal with?

We are planning a trip in late July. From my understanding, they are just now getting a survey done.

I'm not sure about Benin but rural South Africa is pretty eye opening to work in.

Expect things to be 3 times as slow as you'd think. Expect political issues. Expect the need to utilize appropriate technology and the desire to hire locally.

You should have someone, preferbly from the area, on site at all times. designing globally is one thing but construction is a whole other kettle of fish.

take sunscreen - I say this as I was using factor 40 in South Africa and still burned!
