Hey - I'm a long-time archinecter from Portland, Oregon who has just relocated to NYC. I've been all over craigslist looking for apartments, but haven't found the perfect fit yet - probably because my budget is pretty low ($600 - $700) and because I was totally spoiled by my living conditions in Portland...
So, I figured I'd drop a line here and see if anyone's got some space they're trying to fill...
Let me know. (Post here first and we'll figure out how to connect because I'm a little wary of some spam bot picking up my email address if I list it.)
miguel,
you'll probably have some alright luck looking for a roomate or with a roomate for a place. definitely looking in the "outer boroughs" is a good route. for good deals (student style) check the message boards out at pratt in brooklyn, you'll find shares and deals. quite the interesting area too...also, you might be interested in: prospect heights, sunset park or south slope.
try waaay the hell uptown manhattan, hell's kitchen, and the upper east side in the no-man's land around Lexington ave. but in short buildings with the views of either central park or the east river blocked out.
We're homeless for the summer staying at friends in 'boken and up in Port Townsend near Seattle. We've been asked to write a book so we are taking 4 weeks off to do that during the competition registration period. I'm putting a page together and will list it later today..
dude, whats all that cash for -
Thats about 4 months mortgage!
I originally was going to rent but my building only needs 10% down and it was cheaper to buy than handing over the first/last/deposit that slumlords want.
apartment share in NYC?

look outside of manhattan - astoria, etc. and you will find many things in your price range
if you go to the profile page of the person you want to contact (click on their name) you can send mail without having to post your addy on here.
we are selling our studio on 20th/7th if your interested. It'll go on the market in 3 weeks.

I'd love to buy an apartment... I assume you'll be giving the typical Archinect discount (63.5%) - right?
Seriously though, what kind of cash are we talking about here?
I hadn't thought about buying, but let me do some calculations:
$650 Me
$300 Mom
$300 Aunt
$900 Renter #1
$900 Renter #2
$900 Renter #3
$900 Renter #4
$900 Renter #5
--------------------
$5750 Total
Do you think the 8 of us will be comfortable in your place?

cam--i'd buy it, but that would create a business relationship prohibiting me from entering Siyathemba, right? chelsea vs. south africa...hmmm....
As I'm not a voting member of the jury then no, but if you want to buy it with used 10s and 20s thats a different matter.
actually I just got this today --
Landlord came at me with a great deal so I'm staying put -- and need a roomate ASAP ~ $770 p/m
It's a great apartment. Spacious, lots of light, stunning view.
High ceilings, cedar floors, view of Manhattan skyline through ~6' windows + large roof. ~1000 sq ft total.
5 rooms total, large kitchen and large living room. DSL. Fireplace (non-working?)
4 blocks off Lorimer stop on L -- Grand and Union. Pet-friendly (I have a dog).

$5750 is 4 months' mortgage? Really?
So 10% down and $1500/month would buy a place like yours? Does that include the building/maintenance fees and taxes? I imagine it doesn't...
I know absolutely nothing about the market... and haven't had time to research it at all... but buying is honestly an interesting option...
maintainance is $350/400
