internships: when should I start to apply?

eylu

I'm in my last year of my undergraduate architecture program and I am planning to take a year off between my undergrad and grad school. I am planning to get some working experience in this gap year, ideally an 6-12 months internship in firms in europe. Does anyone know when is a good time to start applying? I'm not gonna be able to work until may, 2012 so I'm wondering it if is too early to start looking into firms now. what about the hiring time frame here in states?

In the US, your search should be well underway prior to the end of the year. October-December is prime time. You may not get anything locked down until the March/ April/ May period, however.

In my experience, many firms don't start advertising for internships until January, and some may have a deadline as soon as the end of March/early April.
