Is it common for architects to develop projects by themselves and later sell them to people? (something that a developer would normally do) Or is it too big of a financial risk? Or is there too much work for someone to become both an architect and a developer at the same time?
I was thinking that an architect would have more freedom to design what he or she wants to design without adhering to the needs of a client. I hear that developers generally earn more money than architects do. So couldn't an architect become a developer and
1) earn more money
2) have more freedom in design
Not many architects develop. It's a nice idea, but developers are in it for the money, so design is not their primary concern. The problem with designing it too is wasting too much resources on the design, when the purpose of developing is to make money (more or less).
It's possible, of course, but not common. They are both professions, so it takes twice the time. You could be a lawyer and an account, or an architect and engineer, but usually it just be more beneficial to hire someone that knows his field well.
