Shenzhen is a city like none other in the world, certainly fascinating. In the past 10-20 years it has boomed from being a small village of less than 100,000 to being a viable city of 10 million +. For better or worse, it represent a lot of what China is up to right now, both administratively and architecturally.

In Shanghai, lilong housing (their traditional type) is a must see, and in particular an area called (phoenetically) Shin Tiendy (sorry I have no idea how it should be spelled, but say it out loud and someone will surely know what you mean. Shin Tiendy was once a lilong neighborhood that was taken over by the government and converted into a trendy leisure area with new nightlife etc. It bustles, but at the expense of those who used to call it home (who have now been relocated to some other surely less desirable place)...

In Beijing, make a point to see some Hutong housing (their traditional type). They are quickly being razed in favor of high-rise offices and apartments. Also, you may find offices (such as Urbanus, a local firm in Beijing with an office in Shenzhen) that are willing to show you what they are up to. Urbanus Beijing is working on a building for the 2008 olympics. It's hot.

but this post is about what to see in one of the most historically and geographically interesting parts of the world - where an incredible amount of development and change is taking place, and what the best/most relevant and interesting parts of that change are to see, and what the highlights are...

One place I would highly recommend is, the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan Province, the province where the Pandas are........a stunning natural wonder, actually, when you look at the pictures, you wonder how the pictures was retouched by photographic technique, and yet, when you are really there, it does looks like what you see in the pictures, full of rich colors, and also, its also an area full of Tibetan cultural heritage......a must see....
