a theory about architects and technology

humor me:

imagine a bell curve. along the vertical axis is "work," along the horizontal axis is adoption of technology, increasing left to right.

in the lower left corner of the graph are homebuilders. they don't push the envelope of technology, and they don't need to produce very complex documents. generally, their work is standardized and straightforward. work is completed cheaply and timely.

in the lower right corner are product designers. they use the latest rapid-prototyping software to quickly move from schematics to prototype and production. the software allows changes in the design to be implemented quickly.

in the middle, at the top of the work curve, are architects. adoption of basic CAD technology has allowed architects to create very complex drawings. As the software is not intelligent or "parametric," minor changes may often require lengthy revisions. unlike the product designers, drawings designed for human interpretation must be created.
