The concept of counterflashing shows the fundamental importance of JOINTS and CONNECTIONS in construction. The best material or assembly in the world is wasted if the place it meets other conditions is not properly designed and protected.
get a copy of SMACNA, the book of recommended details and standards published by the sheet metal industry. less foul language, but an incredibly valuable resource, damnit.
(It just occurred to me, in this age of terrorism and counter-terrorism, that an alternate definition of "counter-flashing" would be to expose ones' self to an exhibitionist. Okay, back to work....)

What is counterflashing?
Why do you need it? Is it backup for flashing? Thanks
thanks, makes sense!
it is another component in a well designed masonry flashing system, usually it overlaps the flashing.
it covers the top joint of the roof/wall junction which is vulnerable.

I agree with Jefferson. This site totally rules. It's like Architectural Graphic Standards with foul language.

I think "flashing" as a topic is already pretty racy....
