We hear so much about the work being done in the major markets (and not without reason) but I'd be interested in hearing about what's going on in some of the smaller design communities.
Whether it be firms doing interesting work, unique community outreach projects, growing trends, etc., I think it could make for an informative discussion.
because i don't thing this question is important enough to start a new thread, i have opted to hijack this seldom used thread to ask this question: why is it that the i'd never shop there thread only shows up when i'm logged in?
I've heard of Columbus, Indiana too. Sounds like a good archi-road trip destination... Its a small town, but for some odd reason there are some great modern architectural works. Buildings by I. M. Pei, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi, a nice park by Michael Van Valkenburgh and Stanley Saitowicz, a church by Saarinen, among other things...
but what about small comunities that support a local design scene. Not so much small towns that collect great architecture like Columbus but smaller towns that have a good local design ethic.. ?
bRink- Some odd reason...The reason that there is so much good architecture in Columbus, Indiana is the Cummins Engine Company. They manufacture diesel engines. Back in the day, the president / CEO of Cummins decided that good architecture for his employees would make for happier and harder working employees. I believe that Cummins policy was to pay the design fees of the architects for the buildings in the community.
If you have the chance, you should visit Columbus. It has the best collection of modern buildings out of any small, midwestern town, imo.
Also, I would figure that Grand Rapids / Holland, MI would have some decent project due to the influence of Herman Miller. I have never been there, so I could be wrong.
mdler, i think harry weese's father in law was cummins....helps to build a practice to marry right.
i read an article about 4 months ago about how depressed columbus was with ongoing cummins globalization [what a wonderful word]. the cummuns foundation report says grants to indiana in 2002 were $81,340 down from $2,535,605 in 2000. not sure if they are doing the design fee thing anymore.
hey slooow down, bossman.....you might have a heart attach or somethin.
have to admit, read your post a couple of times and thought....'clearly a long night and must of just got back in"....i was confused and didnt know how to responde.
clearly there are no small communities with great design work and probalby no big communities with great design work so go for it...its saturday and obviously you dont have a date.....
