I'm having a hard time figuring out how to access my contacts list while composing or forwarding a message in gmail. Other mail programs have a hyperlink in the "To:" line that allow you to insert names from your contact list. Is this possible in Gmail?
I'm not sure if you can access the contacts list directly while you're forwarding a message -- I tried this once and it just opened a new window for a new message. But what TED said is right, if you start typing a name in the To: line it will autocomplete for you -- I guess this will work just as well in most cases.

yeah --- as soon as i begin to type a name i get the list and can page down. or you can start at contacts, check it and hit compose.
also now you can have your email go to your outlook account which i much more prefer.
