Granted, it was 20 years ago...

...we found a caretaker who we bribed and let us in. We got there by walking along a trail on the west side of the island, from the upper village.

I would ask students or teachers in some of the Architecture Programs,
e.g.: Syracuse U. in Florence.

There are signs for the arch. The same hiking trail goes to the house. Amazing day, but I wouldnt do it with hiking bags on my back again.

follow the yellow brick road

no, seriously it 's very easy- its on the map, and even though it's not open to the public you can have fun as an architectural spy getting as close as you feel it is safe to get...
and there is some fantastic scenery all over Capri.
and the path comes down the hill so you see it from above- until you get to a big fence or something.
all very exciting.
have fun!

the "big fence" that chairman mao mentioned above (at least when i was there) had a big hole in the bottom of it - so of course i went through. the house looked completly empty and we had every intention of getting closer to check it out. just as we were nearing the steps to the roof a bunch of people pour out of the house and start are way. what little italian i could understand combined with their body language suggested that they were just thrilled to see us. let it be known that only a fluent understanding of italian will get you the nuances of sarcasm. needless to say they were pissed -- they escored us to the proper gate out and to make matters worse my professor was standing there with bribe money in hand. the caretaker lost it and threatened to call the polizia. lots of fun actually and makes for a sooper story. if i can find them i will post the photos i took of the place...really a unique perspective looking up the stairs and all...
