I need one, and I dont want to steal, just some guidelines on whats appropriate and interesting, and whats pretentious and forgettable...
Then again, its hard to say really. Asymptote on its own sounds pretty noncredible as a practice name. The worst one I've heard is "Architecture by Design" which is about as attractive as a dead dog.
I dont really want to incorporate my name, because abbreviated, the 3 letters are certainly not what you want to be associated with.
yes- no one wants to work for ASS,
i used to be tutored by someone from Satelitte Design Workshop, which they chose as a name because they thought it sounded cool, and had a friend who was working for a space program designing sattelites.
draw your own conclusions................
diabase, i think it would be good to first consider the focus of the practice. i think you can quickly see a link between the type of name a firm takes on and the type of work they do.
acronyms >> large corporate firms that was run by a number of dead white guys. nbbj, som kpf, hok.
descriptive >> with [polshek partnership architects, renzo piano building workshop, etc] or without [office of metropolitan architecture] the use of one's name. usually interested in the focus of architecture with a capital A.
suggestive >> name alludes to what they do. work can be more experimental than those above. un studio, form studio.
conceptual >> do i need to say more. asymptote, morphosis, future systems, lo/tek.
out of the box >> names often with no indication as to what they do. big fish latitude, m3.
I think you should choose a practice name based on a toy name. I am particularly fond of Wham-O toys from the 70s, hence you could name your practice after the following products:
Slip N' Slide
Willy Water Bug
Fun Fountain
Wet Banana
Trac Ball
Air Darts
Wham-O Water Blast Speedway
Much better than your run-of-the-mill acronymic and descriptive names
i think another option is "last name + .com", i think it could inmediately lead people to see ur work, and it sounds as an established company, waddya think ?
life is sad life is a bust
all you can do is do what you must
you do what you must do
and you do it well
i'll do it for you baby
cant you tell...
How about ---ARCHIDYLAN
don't use 'archi-' anything (archimedia architectus archivision architettura architos) just 'whatever' architects, or 'whatever' architecture. it's like 'digi-' or 'e-'.
although 'e-digi-arch' and 'arch-e-dig' are both distinct possibilities
Plexus R+D is a good one. Check their site out. Thing here is that kinda like Asymptote or UN studio or OMA etc. it's an attempt to describe the conceputal underpinning of the firm within the name. In this case, Diabase is your best bet...As long as your work rocks and you can become instantly well known.

dont let your title speak for your design. use your name / architects
or your name / architecture. simple.
i think there isnt much worse than a stupid firm title, substituting different spellings or switching between different languages (atilier / studio).
simple = good

Nice one people.
My Acronym [assuming architect al at the end] would be DOA.
better than ASS.
Perhaps, but its not spectacularly auspicious...
Actually, some people have told me that diabase is a good practice name, but I am unsure - feel its a little too abstract...
