Applying to M. Arch II programs from a non-technical background

mwilliam

Hello,

I'm currently entering my senior year in an undergraduate Art History program, with a concentration in architectural history and theory. My plan has always been to apply to a M. Arch II program after graduating; I'm looking for advice on how to approach the next year (I'm thinking of applying at the end of next year).

What are graduate schools looking for in portfolios from students coming from academic, rather than technical, backgrounds? I have taken studio drawing classes but never drafting or technical drawings, and my digital skillset is limited to Sketchup. I have been designing spaces and structures for some time, in line with my academic pursuits, but I can only represent them, as of now, as sketches or rough plans. Should I try to incorporate my thesis research in abridged form?

Thanks in advance for the help,

William

hey william,

i think you meant m.arch I? m.arch II is for those who have b.arch/ m.arch I

i was also confused about these 2 m.archs (and i still am sometimes). but you should look into the schools & their admission requirement. also the forum has threads regarding this as well, since you'll be applying end of next yr, you should still have the luxury of time researching.

based on the majority of opinions, including drafting samples on portfolio is overrated-- i personally wouldn't include any.

however i believe you should include your abdridged thesis research -- afterall this in an academic not a job application.. i'm sure they'd want to see how we think more than how we technically execute ideas with drafting samples. but that said, i personally would give architectural solution/ approach to your art. if this makes sense.

but this is just what i think
