If you do a PhD in building science, there is work to be found in environmental consulting and facade design. But it is closer to an engineering degree than an architecture degree. Expect a lot of programming too.

PhDs are pretty much exclusively for research. Is anybody outside academia doing research in that subject area? I don't know of any.
