How does a self-employed architect get a job or get to work on projects?

avinyiller

I was wondering how a self employed Architect would get a job or a gig?

I would prefer to be self employed, I have no idea how I'd go about this.

  1. find clients
  2. Ask those clients to pay you
  3. Profit (maybe)

you forgot "1B. Do the work." Common beginners mistake!

I might argue that "do the work" should be 2B.

Good point. We all learn eventually. Or we don't get paid.

Basically you talk to people you know who run firms and see if they need freelance help, or have work they are passing on and could refer to you. At the same time get out to business or community events and start networking to meet potential new clients. It's as hard as it sounds, which is why many  architects just settle in for careers in established offices.
