Lumion is user-friendly, but not realistic.

Vray is realistic, but not user-friendly.

Lumion is very user friendly. Especially when you are starting up. And adding to that...we need to explore our expertise in software so as to get the best resultant out of it...both are great in terms of rendering but in my opinion Lumion too can generate great realistic renders in no time...

If you're planning to use V-ray with 3ds max, I highly recommend Corona. It's drastically more user friendly, cheaper, maybe a bit less realistic, but difference won't be very noticable.

Corona got bought out by Chaosgroup. Now vray has all the goodies corona has. These 2 are very similar anyway. If you can use one, you can use the other. You can even just convert with the built in tool. A lot of my assets are vray converted to corona. Chaosgroup has Vantage now though, that is some hot stuff. Works with Vray scene right out of the box. Corona scenes, probably need some conversions and tweaks. Haven't tried yet.

^Similarly, find Enscape is a good alternative to Lumion - cheap, quick to get good renders out, plenty of assets+textures included and has a good knowledge base
