Is french architecture still good?

piero1910

I am asking this question because I do not think that after the generation of Nouvel, Perrault and Portzamparc. They are great french architects. Even the ones mentioned above, I do not know if their work is as great as before. So I want to know what contemporary french architects are considered great because I think when you compare french architecture to portuguese architecture. I think that Portugal has a much higher number of good architects than France. Just to give some examples of great portuguese architects, I would name Siza, Souto de Moura, Aires Mateus, Paulo David, Bak Gordon, Joao Mendes Ribeiro or Joao Luis Carrilho da Graca. I don't think that France is as great anymore in architecture when you compare to other European countries.

It's at least good enough to be capitalized as French.

I think one of the more relevant practices out of France right now is Lacaton Vassal: http://www.lacatonvassal.com/

Sorry I mean "French". I even speak French if you think that France is not important for me. This is the reason why I am asking. Because when I look at French projects on websites such as archdaily or dezeen. I have noticed that people tend to comment negatively about them. So when I look at projects or architects from other countries in Europe, such as Switzerland. People tend to talk nicely or positively about them. Even on this website, someone created a thread about Jean Nouvel’s work, and most of the comments were negative. I can find the link if you want to. I also have noticed that most of French architects tend to use mostly Steel and Glass and I wonder why they do that. Right now, I am a school of architecture and my professors hardly recommend to look at a French architect work. Probably just Le Corbusier. He is Swiss-French.

Sorry for that mistake if English speakers think is so important, but my first language is Spanish and as other latin languages. We do not treat that with the same importance as English does. I can show French articles and they say French in non-capital letters

New build in France is pretty high standart in genaral. But you're a student, so only care about starchitecture porn photos, not actual built environment around yourself.

The awkward wording seems to be tripping everyone up. But I think it's a reasonable question, and one I've wondered occasionally too. Why aren't French firms more prominent competitors to the big international firms like SOM, Fosters, GMP, etc for non-starchitect international work?

As a country / economy it's similar in scale to the UK or Germany, and much larger the the Netherlands or Canada. But I could easily name 5-10 big firms doing work around the world from any of those countries. From France - Nouvel, Dominique Perrault, maybe. But neither of them are really that big, just get good press because of the quality of their work. Odile Decq (sp?) as an upcoming boutique. Is it that the French aren't interested in running a big business? Is it just a language insularity?

OK xx__,

So tell me those non-stararchitects that you think that they are so great.

For midlander, I understand your point too. But I do not mean why the French do not have big firms as those ones mentioned by you. Because I can name you some stararchitects in other countries that they might not have big firms but they have good work. So that is what I wonder about France. Besides the name of Nouvel, Perrault, Portzamparc or even Lacaton et Vassal. I might say that I know also these architects names in France, such as XTU, Manuelle Gautrand, Jacques Ferrier, DDA, Antonio Virga,  AAVP, Hamonic Masson, Dietmar Feichtinger, Rudy Ricciotti, Peripheriques, etc. I just wonder what you think about these architects work.
