how does one get into public art?  Someone who doesn't have connections or good schmoozing skills?

If you thought architecture RFQ and RFP's were tough, wait till you try public art. Being an architect counts for a little, but not much. Unless you have a demonstrated history of small scale local commissions, you have little chance of securing a public commission of any meaningful size.

You also really need to be plugged into a local and national arts scene, have a compelling and well-defined "artist statement", theme and direction to your work, conceptual and theoretical underpinning, good relationships in your local arts community.

Without these things the best route would probably be to 1) become a certified/ approved/ whatever vendor with your local municipality via your architecture business or 2) forge relationships with developers and building managers who have to comply with a 1% for public art program

Slideroom is the other main call-for-entry website.

Or you could design interesting pieces of public and find people to fund it after the fact. "Getting in" to public art is very different from "getting paid" for public art. Start by making interesting things that people like and I bet you'll find yourself in a pretty good position.

sad how much most public art sucks - the real heavy hitters don't bother - think of how much bullshit junky are gets built in crappy office parks its everywhere.  One picasso, calder, anish kapoor for ever 1000 pieces of shit.

architects jumping into that mix probably wont help.
