I am surprised by how similar they all are. All but one are basically linear schemes that do not permit any free exploration of the site or any engagement beyond their perscribed paths. And what happens when you get to the end of the linear path? Those end points are extreemly important and they seem pretty unresolved. Once your done do you have to take the path in reverse to get out?
i think everyone is missing the point, remember this is Stage I of the competition, and those questions get asked and answered. not to mention that out of the 1000 or so submissions, these are the best five. from what i can see these ideas are infinitely better than what was chosen for the NJ 911 memorial.
...unfortunately in the history of the u.s. national memorials, the stage I entries (although uninspired) are probably at their best stage conceptually , they always get dumbed down or VE'd for the final stages and built form....and this one, with the 5 simpleton schemes chosen, is going to follow that path too, unfortunately.
Is it me, or does lately competitions like these end up in immature projects both in design or theory..
i mean is there nothing else but a circle or a line to make a memorial????????
plssssssssssssssssssssssss
it's pathetic !
seems like a memorial which could achieve a rich, albeit ephemeral, quality with less actual substance would be considered very artful and efficient, hm?
I think we should all thank the jury for punking out on this one. The finalists are too subtle, passive, unimaginative. I aint gonna drive for hours to see any of these, and would wager that most out there woudl side with me. I think the greatest shame is that these concepts are so passive that the event in which they are supposed to be memorializing, perhaps the greatest act of spontaneous courage and valor in American history, will be lost forever in the soup of the american psyche.
Sounds like any kind of proposed monument was immediately dismissed and not even considered for an honorable mention. I find it hard to believe that a monument on this site could be considered "overpowering" when a 200 foot tall dragline barely obscures the skyline. It is a fallacy that some kind of monument was not even given a chance, in which case the public could at least be given the chance to react.
Oh, and even a landscape architect like myself knows that "respecting the rural landscape" does not mean that all the site elements have to be built from fieldstone and sticks.

Where is insiderman's scheme? I thought he said he had it in the bag. What a let down.

I disagree, I think there are fundamental problems with the linear schemes imbedded in their designs that will be very difficult to solve.
I think the only finalist that works at all is the McSherry/Surjan project.
I also disagree that these were the best entries. I think that the finalist were the best entries that followed the nationalistic "mission statement"

yeah, i wrote them and told them how uninspiring and safe their choices were.
