I should add, though, that there are plenty of slow computers in the office. Some are more than 5 years old. I only have a fast computer b/c i'm doing some 3d work.
i do the 3d in my office, all the other computers are crap...actually i think i am the only one int the office who can ctually get on archinect without while running ACAD and FormZ and not crash the computer.
That thing is so fast it screams. I wish i would have had this PC in my previous job when i really needed it... one thing i've learned is that investing in a really good computer will make you save money in the long run.
Doug Johnston - get rid of win98....it's not even supported by microsoft anymore plus it's very insecure (connected to a network or the internet). Go with win2kpro or XP pro - you won't be sorry.
A HP compaq d530, P 2.66 256 ram 40 gig hd which is okay
but the onboard intel video card is a total disaster, and because of the small size of the compu there isn't a possibility to put in say a quadro fx 3000.
@ home a athlon 700 with the sole purpuse of playing mp3's and solitaire/minesweep/pinball
at work: slow as hell g4, but gives you time to sleep every now and then when the thing is plotting or doing some other things taking 10 minutes or more.....
at home: a lightning fast (compared to the mac g4) P3 400 which i got for free.
brim, yeah i would get rid of it if i could, but its not mine, and our firms is pretty hesitant, ok so VERY hesitant to put any money into anthing IT related. the computer runs CAD decently, but its just ridiculous that we are using win 98.
How good is your work computer?
I have a Pentium III 733 that SUCKS
I have asked repeatedly for something better and no response
It can only be surpassed by the 1985 Office Depot wreck of a chair I sit on.

Used to work on a P2 400 too actually not long ago
30 seconds delay on every CAD command and
X-Refs crashing all the time became a routine.
I bitched and moaned...
Now my P4 2.6G 1G Ram is too fast I'm experiencing motion sickness...

At home I have a Powerbook G4 and an old iMac. The iMac is my jukebox / entertainment hub and the Powerbook is for everything else.
