How strict are application deadlines?

monkeyboy

So i am in the process of applying to some schools and deadlines are days away..the closest is the 27th of december. I have pretty much completed everything but an still waiting on letters of rec which were requested months ago but still not receieved by me. I call on of my recomenders to "check up" and he tells me that i'll get them in a couple days and not to worry about deadlines becasue they dont mean a thing. This guy is ancient and has probably had the most influence of all faculty in the school of getting students into the schools of their choice (granted that he has some connection their). I fell like i should take his word but he is making me shit my pants. There is no real arguing with this guy either. Nice as hell but set in his ways. What should i believe?

What can you do is the more useful question, no?

I'd send your materials so they arrive (at Harvard, I guess) on time. Tell them that the letters have been requested and will follow in the next couple of days. Don't skip the application entirely only because the (already requested) letters haven't been mailed.

Thanks Zoe, I was planning on doing what you suggested. I was just curious if I should be worried that the total complete application is submitted on time. And you are correct, harvard is the school for the 27th.

don't worry about it. Schools know that many letters of recommendation will arrive late; just make sure to get in all the rest of the application on time.

just get what you have turned in to get you file open. letters can follow.
I realized weeks late that I fucked up part of my portfolio and had to run a corrected copy over to my favorite school. They hadn’t even looked at them yet and let me change mine out no problem. I still got in.

thanks for all the reassurance. now that the letter of rec worries are off my mind now i just have to reassure myself that the shitty binding that occured on all my portfolios will not overshadow the work thats in it. Too late and no money to fix it now. Not the fault of the kinkos but rather the poor assumption on my part that the binding on past portfolios would remain standard through the years. Binding holes bleeding into the images and some text is nothing to worry about...right??? Doesnt hinder the viewing or reading of the portfolio ...just reflects shitty craft this one time.

bringing this post back to to top. So as mentioned in the intitial entry up top, this old prof was making me shit my pants. I hoped to at least receive the letters before i sent my last application out but still no word. I dont want to piss the guy off by calling him and bugging him again but its kinda getting ridiculous. I think he just forgets things or doesnt give a damn when these things need to be in. Should i bug him again?

Yeah, bug the shit outa him. It's part of his job to do this for you and he should be responsible, be the letter good or bad.

it doesn't really need to be done. they know the system and have tons of these letters to write. and the schools do not hold you accountable for these letters. you can turn them in anytime, preferably before the committee sits for round 1.

and they will mail a postcard or letter reminding you of this stuf in early february. you have time, just concentrate on what you can fix.

and honestly, if your work is good, they will admit you anyway.
