les halles, Paris

rutger

David Mangin wins the competition for 'les halles' Paris.

Visited the place last week and tried to project the 4 proposals there. Although I never heard of David Mangin before, he wins and beats oma, Nouvel and mvrdv with a very conservative proposal...to be honest, on paper it seemed to be the least interesting prop, but walking around les halles I started liking it more and more.
With centre Pompidou next door, the area already has it 'landed spaceship', does the site need more 'spaceships' like oma and mvrdv designed? Are the conservative approaches like Nouvel and Mangin did too boring?
I don't know...
What do you think?

thanks for the update- was wondering how that would work out personally i thought Nouvel would win- and i especially liked that tower he had planned over by the st.eustache side....Mangin, who i don't know of outside this competition either- his plan seemed conservative- but like you siad, they don't need another spaceship. and if you were walking around there you probably notice the banlieusards hanging out- which other than those wierd conservatory looking bldgs - is the main problem- ever since they overhauled teh place in what? 70's? and brought the RER in, things got a little too vibrant... You have to admit, the place smells like piss. next to le beaubourg, i think it's hard to have such a big, open space like les halles. things are out of balance....
but then again, nouvel is doing the quai branley museum, and maybe they felt bad giving him more than his fair share of 'grands traveaux' ...but not sure as this project qualifies as one.

paris me manque.....
