I once put together a 'white trash survival kit' for just such an occasion: white castle gift certificates, mini-bottle of jim beam, and powerball tickets in a cardboard box. This worked especially well because we played the game where you can trade/steal gifts. Everyone wanted this one, white trash or not.
a bottle of Bushmills or johnny walker black is always a nice touch
not sure if the person drinks, there are always a few books under 20 good ones too
then there's always the cheesey architectural stuff...printed mug with the office's latest building they were involved with, t-shirt that says."I'm an architect - deal with it!"
