I'm learning autocad and 3d studio max at the moment. I would like to know in which of these programs is used to make a 3d model. If you have a groundplan drawn in autocad, do you make a 3d model also in autocad and use 3d studio max to do the mapping and rendering, or do you export the groundplan to 3d studio max and go from there?

You can do either. Max, however, is used more as a modeling tool. If you are just learning, I'd say learn how to model in Max.
