I'm trying to hash out the perfect title for my thesis presentation. My current choice is "the afterbirth of nihilistic and nostalgic irrationalism." I need a little help replacing "afterbirth." I am looking for a word that describes the result of two opposing ideologies. It is important that the term not suggest that either ideal was compromised to form this result.
Afterbirth seems like an unwanted or negative side effect. I'd like to suggest that designer has come between these two opposing viewpoints and independently come up with the best alternative. Yet, it must be more than a mere compromise between the two.
Gustav, yes I believe you could say that. I'm reminded of Prisig's statement through the voice of Phaedrus. “You are never dedicated to something you have complete confidence in. No one is fanatically shouting that the sun is going to rise tomorrow. They know its going to rise tomorrow. When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths or any other kinds of dogmas or goals (insert nihilism and nostalgia here) it’s always because these dogmas or goals are in doubt."
I once turned in a thesis with such a hella cool wicked awesome title that i got my Cambridge MPhil degree no questions asked.
I probably should not tell but after the title page, the rest of the pages were blank.
The title must have been good! BRILLIANT! LEGENDARY! Words dont do it justice.
Im still searching for a word that will capture the sheer ingenuity of it all. The perfect diction that will capture that je ne sais quoi. The best word in the english language- something along the lines of the word "mother."
And they say that architects are anally retentive? What rubbish!
It may be less that 'afterbirth' has negative connotations than that it doesn't offer the message that Brian's after. 'Afterbirth' is like 'by-product' or 'side effect', but Brian says he's looking for the 'result' which would presumably be the offspring itself, not the placenta and membranes.
So, to push this metaphor to its most ridiculous conclusion: Is Brian looking to focus his project on the baby or the bathwater? (Exploration of issues of disenfranchisement, marginalization, etc. come to mind with the latter. This topic is pregnant with possibilities.)
If the 'result' is the baby, then Brian's right to keep searching in order to make the best possible match - i.e., resonance - between title and the intention.

...have you tried an online or cd thesaurus? they're very helpful in coming up with multiple alternatives.
maybe an extra word might help, like 'after the intersection...' although i think it then becomes too contrived.
