Architecture for the blind

Bryan Finoki

I'm researching housing for the visually impaired and looking for some precedents which are adressing sight issues, spatial references and orientation, temperatures/heat and light sources, textures, etc. Can anyone point out projects addressing the blind? Exploratory museums, housing, street projects, etc.

Much appreciated.

Bryan, probably not what you’re looking for, but Lighthouse has some design guidelines with specific practical direction for the visually impaired.

Take a look at one of the entries for the 1993 Japan Architect Competition "The house with no-style" where Rem Koolhaas acted as juror. Very speculative but pretty interesting.

Sorry we don't help the blind or the handicap.

I am actually working with the Lighthouse, and they have offered some helpful info, but not much in the way of real projects, but thanks for thinking about them. They are a great organization, and I hear NYC has an impressive facility.

I will look that project up and get back to you, thanks for suggesting it.
