coming from someone who did the same 5 years ago, there doesn't seem to be much of a resource. Craig's list seems to be pretty popular with the arch. I work with + young people in DC. What exactly are you looking for? The girl that sits next to me is looking for a roomate in VA (east falls church metro (orange)) for a year.
I would be weary of on-line apartment searches. If you don't know the area you may end up in BFE.
craigslist seems to attract a lot of slum lords who reel you in with misleading ads...so be careful. rental prices seem pretty consistent just about anywhere inside the beltway so you might as well try to live as close to work as possible and avoid the nightmarish dc commute. be skeptical of any one bedrooms/studios offered for under $1000. if you want to live alone you won't be likely to find anything for less than $1000 that's not either a tiny studio in a dated dorm-like high rise full of college kids or an "english basement." most DC rowhouses have half-basements which people have converted (often illegally) to rental units. they're cramped, dark, and dank. i wouldn't touch.
NE and SE (besides Capital Hill and Eastern Market) have much cheaper rents than NW DC, but are not nearly as gentrified. This may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view.
thanks guys. J3, tell your friend that i would be interested as long as she doesn't mind animals...falls church is around the area i am looking (relatively close to mclean)..and thanks again

I would agree with bryan4arch, $1000 a month is probably as cheap as you can get in NW DC (for a decent 1 bedroom or studio).
If you don't mind suburbia, you can find cheaper apts in Virginia that are right on the metro. Here is a link to the metro map http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm
