Autocad LT

bRink

What are the shortcomings of autocad LT vs. Autocad 2011 architecture? If you don't care for autocad 3D and want basic functionality like sivas drafting tools, dimensioning, xref tools, layout, etc. are there any major features missing from LT? Seems there's really no need for Autocad architecture if you are just doing 2d drafting?

the most annoying things are you cannot do xclip, flatten, dynamic blocks (use a lot of block commands, like bcount), and create/load custom scripts, use macros or automate anything. There's no sheetset manager, which becomes a pain when you're trying to manage/print sets of drawings with a least a dozen or two sheets.

IMO - it's fine if you're doing basic drafting on small projects with only a few sheets, but anything moderately complex or highly repetitive it's better to just spring for the full version.

@toasteroven: not quite true. dynamic blocks works in LT2011, as does xclip...

Sheet sets are "different" in LT, you cannot modify your own LSP-files, 3d-drawing (and rendering) are not possible in LT (but you don't care for that). Oh, and more imporant in case you share licenses: LT doesn't enable network licenses...

I see, thanks for the info.

Next question is: what is the oldest version of LT you would use as a cheap home license for drafting up work? Presumably if you are not networked, and you don't need 3D in autocad, an older version, say a used copy of 2000 or 2002 would be good enough if you only need to work independently...

Basically I'm looking for the cheapest and still effective 2D autocad for home use on small TI and single family house projects... Or renovations... Even for work stuff really if you have the latest 2011 autocad architecture at the office at work, you can open files in 2011 and back save in cad, unlike revit, right? So it seems like an old copy for home use is sufficient, if you just want to draft... True?

I know this sounds super cheap but this is just for a convenience copy when I don't have access to my work computer...

username - I've used LT 2010 - it doesn't have xclip or dynamic blocks - so that's good news.
