design sheet/portfolio/ or slide-show?

10

Hi all,

I am a 2nd year M. Arch student applying to overseas firms for internships this summer. I am unsure whether to produce design sheets, a portfolio, or a simple pdf slideshow to show my work. I don't have any significant professional experience so it would be mostly academic work.

Would it be okay to present only one project?
My feeling with a portfolio is that I'm not going to be printing this, so what's the point of formatting it for print, instead why not create a PDF slideshow to be viewed on a computer? Or should I just make some design sheets?

I would greatly appreciate whatever help you might have. Thanks!

not sure what mdler means.

In Germany sending portfolios electronically is the way to go. Stuff sent by mail just seemed to sit in our mailbox for ages until it was time to clean up the office, at which point we'd maybe have a quick cursory look before throwing them in the recycle. I guess it should be noted that we weren't actively looking for new people though....

But the point is that email is definitely not only acceptable, but the norm. I'm surprised that (apparently) that's not the case in USA.

So in short, yeah, just make a pdf document. Whether you call it a portfolio, design sheets, or whatever is irrelevant as long as it:
- demonstrates some sort of ability / skill in regards to design or architectural practice
- is compact enough that it doesn't take ages to load
- can be opened and operated by any monkey on any computer (ie pdf, instead of some weird format nobodys ever heard of)
- is short and sweet
- leaves a lasting positive impression that will hopefully lead to further emails, interview, usw..

mdler is messing with you (i don't know why, he is otherwise so nice).

just send a pdf portfolio, try to keep it under 5 mb.

we get pdfs all the time, especially right now as it is intern season, and pdfs are just fine.

issuu is also ok though i admit i like a pdf better. if you have a website we will look at that too, though i find it is difficult to make as compelling a pitch when working that way.

but that is not the real issue. we are mostly blind to the format, but hate it when people who don't know our work apply to us and send us portfolios full of work that is 180 degrees opposite of what we do.

please take the time to match your work to the people you want to work for, or otherwise have a connection of some sort. otherwise you are wasting your own time and the time of whoever is going to flip through the portfolio.

good luck
