i have a "speedy" laptop with an I7-Q840 and an Nvidia Quadro FX 1800M but am getting very terrible autocad viewport performance. The lag really only happens when I'm editing lines via grips or drawing a line... cpu useage spikes and it's ridiculously slow. Am I missing a toggle or something somewhere to cause this to happen. The computer is amazingly fast in 3d (max, rhino, cad) so I know it's not a hardware issues.
Sounds like a situation for Autodesk ? Goodluck, hope y're not running pirated software. May be something to do with your processer or motherboard. If it isn't merely the graphics processor...
ditto with the hatches and the purge. when we have hatches turned on viewports take ages to load. i don't know why, but shutting them off does make all well again in the land of oz.
We've had a rash of problems with AutoCad lately (kicking you out of files, crashing, fatal errors, etc)... Autodesk said the problem was due to running AutoCad 2008 on machines running Windows 7 - their solution? Upgrade to AutoCad 2011 of course.

there has been an issue with "solids" in AutoCAD since about R2005 or so. It can manifest with solid hatches, true type fonts or objects created using the "solid" command (which was at one time the only way to get a true solid fill). Wipeouts can also wreck havoc--they're considered raster images in the .dwg. . .raster images in ACAD slow things down considerably. If you're happening to be using a .dwg that was originally created by another program (ArchiCAD is notorious for this), wipeouts may be a contributing issue.
also, a bit of a warning: the latest video driver isn't always the solution and in fact may end up causing more problems. Check Autodesk's site to see what the latest tested and "certified" driver for your card is, chances are it's a few versions older than the one currently available from the card manufacturer.
im testing out the Mac version of cadd, and now it looks nice, but once i get into it, i remember why i stopped using cadd, wonder why a company as affluent at Mac doesnt know that Cadd is a dinosaur of drafting?

it's a legit copy of Autocad so that's not the issue.
processor/motherboard... perhaps but the machine is fine during all other uses.
Do you have a lot of hatch or pattern on that drawing?
If so, turn them off and "purge" the drawing.
Make sure you have the latest driver for your graphics card installed.

Turning off Aero in Windows 7 helped me when I had a similar sounding problem using studio max.

I do the line weighting and hatching in Illustrator.
