M.Arch I -- Design/build programs

mpsyp

Hi all. So glad I found the site. As a prospective architect-in-training it's great to read the "Confessions of an Architect" and "Describe your day at work" threads. A little disheartening, I must admit, but a good dose of realism, nonetheless. (Let's not even talk about the salary questionnaire!)

You could say that I still have that bright-eyed bushy tailed exuberance of a youngster not yet acquainted with the harsh realities of being an "architect." :-/

Anyway, I have a question about schools... I'm looking to matriculate in Fall of '05 and I'm especially interested in programs that have design/build programs and/or a hands-on emphasis on building technology. I love theoretical design and all but I want to be grounded in the basics so that I know how a building is really built when I graduate.

So far I have found design/build programs at University of Kansas, Yale School of Architecture, Parsons, and Auburn. University of Texas in Austin also seems to have a fledgling program. I am also looking at Columbia (in NYC), Harvard, and MIT. Are there some other good ones I should know about?

Thanks in advance.

Marc

Marc, not really sure about which are the best school programs for D.B, but maybe consider swinging a hammer for a part-time or summer job. That kind of experience was invaluable for me anyway.

If your goal is to be involved with a D.B firm, look in your area for firms and see if any need help. I have two professional acquaintances that run D.B firms and they are always looking for the right young people willing to learn the office and the field. A unique mix to learn from!

Actually I designed the remodel of my upstairs (also done in Sketchup), converting a big room with a couple wierd closets into a master bedroom with walk-in closet and full bath. I've done a bit of the work myself, including framing and some plumbing (with qualified supervision). I am thinking I can submit my design and before/after photos as part of my portfolio...

Not set on a D/B firm, necessarily, but I do want to possess those skills.

I guess I've already found most of the design-build programs out there??? Surely there are some that I'm missing!

Not sure the school, but Bill Carpenter teaches in Georgia...he used to be at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta
He would be a good person to talk to...he wrote a book on design build back in 1997 called Learning by Building (he lists 10 schools/case studies). Van Nostrand Reinhold is the publisher.

The University of Washington has some design build studios that you can take. I don't know if I would really call it a DB program, but there are a fair amount of people interested in that sort of thing there.

I personally spent a quarter in Mexico as part of a DB studio. We built a school. It was a great mix of cultural awareness and building experience. (Also good to spend the Seattle winter in sunny Mexico) The website from our quarter is still up here.

There are other design build studios based in Seattle. They usually work with a local community to build something in the city.

I don't know about the other schools you listed, but Auburn does not offer an M. Arch.

Design/Build programs are pretty friggin sweet! One of our graduate professors here at IIT started up the Design/Build at U of Kansas and is currently trying to do the same here. She gave a lecture on it and it looked so awesome. The application she discussed was a habitat for humanities house. All the students made there own designs and models first semester, then 2nd semester they actually built the house. It was one of the best lectures all year, it actually kept my eyes open. I am excited to see it here at IIT and I know we have a M Arch program!

Are you sure that wasn't the lady from University of Texas in Austin? Dan Rockhill does the studio at U of K, and I'm pretty sure he founded it... I went to one of Rockhill's lectures last month and it was pretty inspiring...
