Columbia Intro to Arch for BSc in Arch. student

soali

Hello everyone,

I was contemplating attending Columbia's Intro to Architecture over the summer '11 and had a few questions. I looked through the forum and didn't find exactly what I was looking for.

Okay, so firstly, I am an architecture student, however I will only be receiving a BSc in Architecture. So, I was wondering if it would be worth it to attend the summer studio as far as increasing my chances to get accepted to GSAPP, as well as, gaining experience. My school is much more traditional as far as design, and want I am looking to broaden my horizons.

Also, I was hoping somebody who has taken the program enlighten me as far as how they go about placing students in studio. IE: more experienced/less experienced/not experienced at all.

And lastly, are they very picky in acceptance to the program? Is GPA looked at very closely?

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.

The only good thing about Columbia is the extensive network of alumni, I know some people that went there.

i attended the intro program in 2005 and am currently in their AAD program. i do not know for sure if attending the program assisted in my acceptance, but i did make a few connections that summer. it also helped my portfolio and altered the way i thought about architecture at the time (for the better).

as for placement, there were essentially two studio types - one for people with architectural experience and one for more liberal arts type undergrads. i would assume you would be placed with the former.

gpa? i doubt it, but if you are attempting to apply for the graduate program at a later date you should consider trying to up your gpa somehow. i think the summer program is relatively easy to enter. just make a nice portfolio.

Thanks for the replies.
Does anyone else have any light to spread on this topic? I want to be absolutely sure this will be beneficial before I spend $5000+ on the program.

so i was there this past summer and the studio is great if you already have experience and simply want to expand your conceptions of practice and design while adding projects for your portfolio.

i come from a fine arts/humanities background and was placed with other architecture students and those already working in the industry. most of my peers were either students of architecture in bsc/barch programs or they had graduated some time ago and were working at firms doing both interior and arch in general.

it's not really a sure way to get into the graduate programs at the gsapp. while you're there you'll know if you fit the school and vice versa. if so, then you'll likely get along with faculty and in the end it might work to your advantage.

there are numerous advantages to being at the gsapp over other programs and while "creativity expert" above may not believe so, if it's a school you feel strongly about the summer program is worth the time and resources to explore the unique resources present.

Would you mind posting some of the work you completed in the course? Or you could just email me. Sorry if this is asking too much, I'm just trying to get a good understanding of what the course will be like.
Thanks

I'm going to the Introduction to Architecture program this summer. I'm from a non-architectural background and really willing to gain some design experience during this workshop. Does anyone know whwther there will be enough practice time for people from backgrounds other than architecture?

Thanks!
