Sunny myrtle beach miss face. Nice here - quickly changing - but I have gone through short periods of serious home sickness. Esp. when I come back to visit and go to fenway, eat clam chowda' etc.

Hey is the big dig really leaking something like 16 millions gallons?

I've been through Myrtle Beach...I had an awkward incident where some dude in a Beetlejuice costume tried to feel me up in front of my grandparents (thats another thread...)

The dig is leaking-good thing it wasn't during my underground tour!

Doing the Archvoices seminars by any chance? If so, I'll see you there!

yeah...I'm going back and forth between that and the diversity symposium. Are you going to the gala? I did some volunteer work so I wouldn't have to pay.

Nope, not doing the gala and my school's night. I have to drive 1.5 hours after everything is done to get home, so I didn't plan on hanging around much. I'm doing 3 of the 4 Archvoices, along with an IDP seminar and another on artist/architect collaboration.

I did the Tony Platt Build Boston scholarship thing and got the BSA to pay for all 5 of my sessions, which isn't too shabby. Otherwise my work would have paid for them out of my continuing education money, but I'd rather do something fun with that...

I did a combination of things to get mine paid for-Tony Platt scholarship, volunteer, signing up for organizations that are paying for members... I was lucky today-someone at work didn't have time to go to the women in design conference and I got to take her place.

I'll be grabbing lunch with a co-worker and someone I graduated with on Thrusday after the Finding Purpose session, and the more the better. I'll be easy to pick out (I think) during the ArchVoices sessions: beard, glasses, piercings. Give a shout if you'd care to join us.

Well...its done. Any feedback. I personally felt that the archvoices finding purpose was generally good-but the generation next one was pretty bad. It was a mixed bag for me-Any other opinions?

I'd say the archvoices was good, nothing super-duper amazing like we'd all would have liked, but good. For me the worst was the 8am session (can't remember the name of any of them at the moment), but I'm not so sure if thats because of the content or because it was 8am. The one with the panel of students didn't seem very productive, just got to hear their stories. I bounced from that one 10 minutes early so I could stretch before my next session.

The artist-architect collaborations session was alright. They had really great people talking (people from the THINK team, runners-up from the WTC memorial, and the artist that did the Irish Hunger Memorial), but they didn't really delve too deep into how to establish collaborations, etc.

I'd have to say it was overall pretty good, but compared to a day of pumping CAD it wins by a landslide.

kissy_face: what was it about the "next generation" session that made it bad for you?

I was suppose to attend that forum as well and all the other diversity forums but got caught up with some personal matter. just wanted to find out what they talked about.

the intention sounds great. and as with all the aia, bsa meeting it's all talk and no action.

so, did anyone get anything out from any of the forum?

My first complaint is that I wish it would have been more interactive with the whole audience. They had good intentions, but the format wasn't all that productive. I didn't really care to hear about their (the panels) personal stories- its not like they have done anything that most young people in the audience hadn't done. If was going to be all informal like that then it should have been REALLY open, with no panel and the questions posed to everyone in the audience.

My second complaint is that I wish it would have been more diverse (seeing that it WAS co sponsored by the diversity forum) There wasn't even a person of asian or hispanic decent on the panel. I think the moderator played it safe and didn't ask difficult or thought provoking questions. The closest they got to the issue was "do you have a lot of women in your studio or office?" I was like-you have to be kidding me! There are real issues of diversity in this profession-and the questions weren't even touched. In terms of other diversity, I think that there wasn't enough academic diversity either. There were no people with a B. Arch on the panel, or people who were doing stuff really off the main stream. I just didn't find the panel that interesting.

THe last diversity panel (I think the title has something to do with interning and education or something) got a little heated at the end. That one was interesting because the moderator wasn't afraid to push buttons and people (well one person) wasn't afraid to push back!

I also felt the women in design symposium was good.

Did anyone get a chance to go to the Unbuilt Architecture Award debriefing? It was a smaller event tied to the main exhibition hall Wed or Thur night.

I couldn't go and was curious if the projects were interesting or if anything interesting was said.
