actually, detailing these things are a lot of fun specially if you are doing the old fashion way with profile tools, different curves, a lot of calculations, feel for composition, knowledge of eye movement as it relates to perspective and space, knowledge of its history and its abstraction... the list can go on.
for example you start to detail above dining room with a floor plan, elevations, ceiling plans to get every proportion close to where it is 'correct' without losing the balance. three things are important in these kind of compositions: balance, balance, balance. and then, you start with your mouldings, trims, plaster details. start incorporating artists and craftsmen for their bit. colors, upholsteries, draperies, candle holders, wall sconces, chandeliers, fire places, art, full size drawings for some details, etc, etc...
you always negotiate the risk of being vulgar and being a great composer, former being the category most fall into.
it is really no different than any other composition or classical music, i was told. I think it is more like being a tailor.
i had the fortune of working for a beaux arts trained architect and a decorator in one of my first intern jobs, restoring a 1920's villa on sunset blvd in los angeles...
i have respect for its architectural mechanics, rather than uneducated rejection. what it represents, i am critical of..
