Project Overview
Design Against the Elements is a global architectural design competition meant to find a solution to the problems presented by climate change. Spurred by the devastation wreaked in the Philippines by tropical storm Ondoy (Ketsana)in 2009 and driven by a powerhouse multidisciplinary group of organizations from the private, institutional, and government sectors, the project aims to draw together the most innovative minds in the fields of architecture, design, and urban planning to develop sustainable and disaster-resistant housing for communities in tropical urban settings.
... hmmm, how does architecture respond to these kinds of situations? i believe that architecture will be in its finest form if it thrives and rises above global and humanitarian issues such as this..

Manila wasn't prepared for a disaster like Ondoy - - I don't think most cities will be prepared for something like that. If I'm not mistaken a month's worth of rainfall within HOURS. That incident was plain unfortunate...The disastrous results were due to a combination of a whole lot of things - - mindless decisions developers (the communities severely affected were by sub par developers), government inadequacy and the people's indifference towards their country and the environment per se.
I'm more interested in the Urban Planning solutions presented in this competition. Basically, Filipinos build to last (the concept of moving from one house to another at every stage of their lives are nearly unheard of, so when they build a home, they usually design up to their retirement) - - albeit, unsustainably, with little regard for the environment, local resources and national heritage - - which saddens me and most Architecture and Planning professionals I know.

why isn't it Design WITH The Elements?
but you have to not be somewhat willing to learn human hair extensions to take advantage of that. (most architects aren't). clip in hair extensions
