The design for this home was inspired by our client’s desired courtyard and the utilization of passive solar heat. Initial massing and sunlight animation studies were conducted to determine if the limiting factors on the site, an existing tree and the neighbors house to the south, would allow the position of the courtyard and its south facing glass to catch sufficient winter sun.
The wish list also included a formal, open entrance, a variety of materials and the convenience of an attached garage. Square footage, materials and finishes were given careful consideration as budget constraints kept price per square foot targets in the $150 range.Organizing programmatic functions of the home revolved around these core design and budgetary factors.
The resulting courtyard, creates a visual connection from both the dining room and family room as well as the second floor hallway, master bedroom deck and a second floor bedroom. Its deep overhangs and a sun screen help manage the summer sun. The added exterior surface area and the ability of the home to look back on itself, increases the variety of ways to experience the home, allowing modestly sized spaces to feel much larger.
