Ruch Chorzow Stadium, Chorzow, Poland, (2013)
Andrea Maffei Architects studio is the recipient of the honorable mention in the competition for the Ruch Chorzow Stadium in Poland, which called for the project of a new sports facility with a seating capacity of 12,000-16,000. The project area includes a stadium, a football field for training and a "sports village" with shops, restaurants and meeting places, which makes the area accessible 7 days a week. The organic-shaped roof supported by slender steel columns filled with concrete, covers the entire area sheltering visitors from the bad weather and creating a huge covered square. The stadium is composed of a concrete base entirely surrounded by a terrace, which is interrupted on the Western side of the building, in correspondance to the huge volume attached to the roof, characterized by a thin steel striped shell, which gives an high-tech feature to the building. The stadium bleachers are visible from the outside of the building and are composed of prefabricated L-shaped elements supported by pillars and beams. The stadium is equipped with an independent roof system, supported by trusses connected one to the others with thin steel arches and a teflon membrane which creates a light shadow on the football field.
