The existing two-story masonry building was a former shopkeeper building with a ground floor retail space and a second floor apartment. The main program centers around a master suite being added to the second floor of the existing floor plan that consisted of two bedrooms and one bathroom. We formed the cantilevered, Corten steel addition at the back with a double height bedroom, bathroom and private deck. The overhang provides shade and collects water that can be used in the garden. We opened up the enclosed staircase and designed a custom guardrail made from blackened steel and white oak
