Broadway Family Apartments

Broadway Family Apartments consists of 81 low-income units in the Northeast Waterfront Historic District of San Francisco, a context of historic brick loft buildings and mid-rise commercial office buildings which was shattered in 1960 by the infamous Embarcadero Freeway. The destruction of the freeway following the Loma Prieta earthquake created this opportunity for city repair.

An initially contentious community process concluded with unanimous approval for this building complex that restores the fragmented block and gives low-income housing the solidity and dignity of the older structures.  The project accomplishes these goals while simultaneously accommodating a rich program of childcare, open space, community rooms and social services in the linked courtyards of the mid-block.
