Located in the City of Hoboken, Ladder 2 - Engine Co. 5 or “The Island” was the first firehouses to be restored and renovated under an improvement program.  The building had been structurally weakened and stripped of its original details over the years, resulting in unsafe and inadequate conditions for contemporary use.

The challenge we faced was to replicate the integrity and spirit of the original structure and totally renovate the building. This residence for firefighters required a balance of functionality and warmth.

Existing structural failures were stabilized including the entire reconstruction of the engine floor and helical steel reinforcing within the main facade. The renovation also involved the construction of a new dispatch room, bathroom and communication system.  The second floor which contained the sleeping areas, Captain’s room, bathrooms and kitchen received a complete reconstruction and were fitted with state of the art appliances.  The facade required extensive repairs and repositioning which restored its appearance to its original conditions.
