j-space is a project with two lives: one at sea and the other on land. Sited approximately 200 yards off the Ipanema coast in Rio de Janeiro and using the paintings of Janaina Tschäpe (also the client) as a point of departure, j-space is conceived as a destination and rest area out in the waters of some of the city's most popular surfing. Presented here in its first life (sea), j-space is tethered to the ocean floor such that how and where one occupies it is directly determined by the ebb and flow of the tides. In its next life (land), it will become the artist's studio in the mountains of Bocaina de Minas.
Materials: bioresin, biofoam, hemp/flax linen, seawater dissolving plastic.
Scheduled to be complete Summer 2012.
