The project consists of a 5,600 SF, 2 story single family house overlooking a canal
Our goal was to design the house in a way that addresses its unique location while working with a language within the tradition of South Florida Modern Architecture.
The house presents two distinct approaches to its composition. The front is designed to emphasize the entrance by positioning the openings and textures in a such a way that focuses the attention on on the transparent center of the house. The material palette is kept at a minimum and a series of layered planes allows us to both direct views and reduce the prominence of the garage doors. These doors are treated as another abstract surface that blends in with the others in an abstract composition. The rear of the house is all about “looking out”. We introduce a large white frame that serves to orient and select the preferred views down the canal. While the front is all about vertical elements that direct the view, the rear is horizontal to frame it.
In terms of the general planning, the house is sited at an angle from the canal in order to shield it from some direct neighbors and provide longer views down the canal. This decision also allowed us to create a larger back yard and pool.
The interior layout of the house is kept simple and open with a monumental stair at the entrance.
The interior palette was kept limited to light colors. Woods were introduced in certain areas to bring warmth and texture.
