216 Bowery

The project consists of a modernization and 2-story addition to a 1850s 3-story building located within the NYC Little Italy Special District and listed within the NRHP Bowery Historic District.

The original cast iron piers and arched girder at the storefront were retained, infilled with new modern storefront, and provided with a new steel & glass canopy. The original 170 year old hydraulic pressed brick & slate facade was retained, modified for larger windows and reinforced & repointed for many more years of service.

The addition is crowned with a mansard roof that provides a distinctive line from the street and gives a nod to the mansard at 222 Bowery, a NYC Landmark and former home of William S. Borroughs. A large skylight with operable vents illuminates the 5th fl, and a new roof terrace with elevator access is provided for use by tenants of all floors.
