Unjeong New Town, northwest of Seoul, has been developed as the second new townin the metropolitan area since 2003.Located in the center of the city, Haesol Elementary School is surrounded by new apartments.During the process of developing the new town, the history and context of the site, which consisted of hills and green fields, were erased for the sake of convenience.Children in this new town were living in monotonous daily lives, walking on flat roads through similar-looking apartments, schools, academies, and other vertical buildings. Furthermore, there was no element to stimulate children's imagination and release energy in the stainless steel-structured school activity space installed in a flat playground.For Haesol Elementary School in this environment, we started the project with the architect's wish that at least children could feel a variety of spatial sensations in the playscape.Furthermore, our unique experiencewhich we designed, will be the first step for children living in the new town to develop awareness of 'my neighborhood, my school.'

We started the co-creative participatory workshop by filling in the blanks of the two sentences, "Playscape is [        ]" and "I want to play [        ] in our school.". Because it was important to understand the daily life and emotions of children living in a new town.Among the children's answers, we were impressed with the answer: "Playscape is a place of comfort and dream where the mind can rest.". Through 2D sketching activities, children have drawn a structure in which various spaces circulate, and through the 3D module making activity, they have drawn abstract play methods that climb and slide. We identified the emotional and functional needs of children in the playscape through a total of four co-creative participatory workshop.Above all, the workshop provided children with an opportunity to restore the notion of diversity and publicity that the 'playscape' has.

In order to create an integrated and three-dimensional playscape in the school, we got the motif from the appearance of the hilly terrain which was originally located at the siteand logo design of Haesol Elementary School. Triangle and semicircle face each other in a v-shaped formation on the ground and the holes, pipes, ropes, climbing holders, and nets are placed on these sides to freely go up and down and play.Through the gentle hills above the flat playground, children experience a three-dimensional space that is not easily felt in the city. 

The name of the project, ‘MoiPlayplate’, comes from ‘Moida’ which means ‘gathering’ in Korean. On the slopes facing each other, children naturally come together to sit, chat, and relax.It only rises a little from the bottom, but the view of the city from the top of the structure is quite different from what children used to see. Before going to the academy after school, the children of Haesol Elementary School will gather here to play and relax together. The MoiPlayplatewill be a shelteranda stage for talking about dreams with friends.
