Seattle, WA
Ferdinand is a small collection of striking townhomes in an area dominated by single-family houses from the first part of the 20th century. Located on a complex corner in the heart of Columbia City, the project’s design aims to blend into the neighborhood’s aesthetic using residential characteristics from the surrounding houses, accented by modern touches. The townhomes complement the neighborhood with a dark exterior and angular, Mansard-roof-inspired design beautifully contrasted by bright green foliage and light wood touches throughout.
Each of the three-story homes includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms, complete with generous roof decks above to offer residents semi-private outdoor space and 360-degree views of Seattle.
Through direct outreach to neighbors, Johnston Architects' team incorporated design elements identified as most important to nearby residents. A top priority was to maintain a safe and welcoming pedestrian experience, accomplished through strategic exterior and outdoor lighting, improved sidewalks, and outdoor bicycle storage.
Another local request - and ever-present goal for JA - was building for a more environmentally-responsible future. JA supported the Ferdinand development in achieving Built Green 4-Star certification and, in partnership with Root of Design, incorporated trees, lush landscaping, and bioretention planters at ground level. In a nearly impossible feat, JA’s design for Ferdinand was approved by the City of Seattle’s Design Review Board with zero comments or corrections, showcasing the firm’s expertise in the local entitlement process and multi-family development requirements.
