The firm has a strong commitment to sustainable design. Whenever possible, we create projects that are highly energy efficient and are healthier places in which to live and work. The firm utilizes two highly esteemed systems in its approach to sustainable design: LEED and Passive House Design. Passive House Design focuses specifically on the reduction of building energy consumption, utilizing a highly technical, calculated methodology. LEED, on the other hand, is a broad-based program, encompassing a multitude of factors that go into creating a healthy and sustainable building project.
Stephen Killcoyne is one of a small group of American architects certified in Passive House Design, as accredited by the Passivhaus Institut. This international organization has established a rigorous methodology for creating ultra low energy consuming buildings. Energy reduction—an increasingly important consideration in today’s world—is accomplished through the use of highly insulated walls, high performing windows, tight air infiltration control, building orientation and heat-recovery fresh air ventilation systems. With the proper application of these key features, the heating and cooling system of a Passive House building is approximately one tenth the size of a typical system. This approach to design offers continuous fresh filtered air, great thermal comfort, greatly reduced heating and air conditioning costs and a large reduction in the need for fossil fuels. The implementation of the Passive House Standard is widespread in the Europe and is taking hold in the United States. Across the globe, apartment buildings, individual homes, schools and office buildings have all been constructed utilizing this system with great success.
Daniel Allen is a LEED-certified architect as accredited by The U.S. Green Building Council. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally recognized green building certification system. LEED promotes sustainable building and development practices through a suite of rating systems designed to recognize projects that implement strategies for better environmental and health performance. Daniel has been working with LEED standards for many years, helping clients create more healthy and sustainable projects. One such example is a large interior office project created for L’Oreal. In this project, Daniel designed a floor plan that opens up to the natural light and surrounding views for the betterment of all employees. The office place was awarded the LEED Silver Rating.
